Halle Berry faces a heated international child custody battle
When the glamour of the big screen fades, the lives of movie stars bear striking resembles to many Virginians, especially those who are involved in family disputes. Halle Berry's on-going child custody dispute demonstrates just how true this is. Her custody battle also shows that a parent's celebrity status will not override the best interests of the child when a court resolves a custody dispute.
Berry and her ex-boyfriend, who she dated for five years, are involved in a widely publicized custody battle over their four-year-old daughter. Their dispute has been on-going since 2010, when the couple split. Like many couples, they attempted to reach an out-of-court agreement. When they faced an impasse, however, they recognized that the legal system was the only avenue by which to resolve their disagreement over the terms of their daughter's custody.
As of late, the couple is specifically fighting over whether Berry can move her daughter to France -- where her new fiancé resides. In support of her request for an international move, Berry argues that Paris is a safer place for her daughter to live. Her child's father, however, is a resident of Los Angeles. Weighing these different considerations, the judge presiding over the matter ultimately ruled in favor of Berry's ex-boyfriend, denying Berry's request to relocate her daughter to France.
Like Berry, Virginian parents going through a custody dispute can present numerous arguments in attempts to retain custody rights or visitation rights. The law outlines several factors that a court can consider when determining a custody agreement. Safety, stability, and joint parenting are just some of the considerations. An experienced family law attorney can help determine which particular factors are important to highlight in each custody case.
Child custody disputes present real issues that not even movie stars cannot avoid. Retaining advice from a lawyer familiar with custody issues can help parents prepare for the hurdles that may arise in such battles.
