Could having a string of bad days lead to divorce?

A research study has come up with another reason that your marriage could be heading for divorce -- competing with your spouse on who had the worst day at work.

According to a study conducted by the Florida State University College of Business, couples who compete with one another as to who had the worst day at work, end up placing a burden on their family with their workplace problems and this could lead to divorce. When both spouses work outside the home, coping with the stress that their jobs entail, can take a toll on the marriage unless the couple is willing to support one another.

Researchers studied 400 working couples and asked them about their relationship and stress levels. What they found is that if there is a lack of support for their career from a spouse, it can cause issues with career advancement as well as conflict in the home. In addition, couples who had a good support system at home, reported that they had a good marriage and that they were able to concentrate better at work and have positive relationships with colleagues. They were also less tired after work and were less critical of their spouse and children.

The most supportive relationships from the study group had a lot of common traits including:

  • The couple understands one another's daily work demands.
  • They can talk to their spouse at anytime about issues or complaints that come up at work.
  • The couple agrees not to talk negatively about minor work issues with the family.
  • Couples did not compete with their spouse on who had the worse day.

Just as stress can wreak havoc on other areas of your life, couples need to be aware that work stress could cause them to be unhappy in their marriages. Stress can bring people together and also tear them apart.

While divorce is never an easy decision, if you are contemplating divorce, you should seek the advice of an attorney. They understand the emotional and financial issues involved and can help you navigate through them. Creating the life you want after a divorce is what an attorney can help you achieve.
